![]() ![]() This is hard to believe, for it was an improbably charming book. He points out that Less had a hard time finding a home and was turned down by 12 UK publishers before one finally took a punt. The pride he feels is much deserved: Greer had previously spent two decades as a well-reviewed but never quite bestselling author who had occasion to wonder, at times, “whether I’d ever have another book published again”. It glints as Greer turns it this way and that. “See,” he adds, holding it aloft, “it’s gold.” Clearly, when an author is the recipient of an award as fancy as the Pulitzer – Less won it in 2018 – the publishers have the budget to be as fancy as they like for their follow-up. ![]() This,” says Andrew Sean Greer, pointing over his shoulder, index finger extended, “is my new book.” He turns to pick up the US version of his new novel, Less Is Lost, the sequel to his 2017 global bestseller, Less. ‘I can’t pull off the same trick twice, so with my new book I didn’t even try’ (Kailel Robert) ![]()

![]() For our part, our cut (as publishers of some of these books) goes right back into research on international fiction and into translations. In some cases, the writers will earn out their advance from the proceeds. ![]() Where does the money from this StoryBundle go? Well, first and foremost to the writers and publishers. ![]() It’s the most mammoth release yet from our Cheeky Frawg Books. Add to that high-quality fiction anthologies from Clarkesworld, A thena Andreadis and Kay Holt, Marian & James Womack, and you’ve got a lovely assemblage of the best in modern speculative fiction. The Leena Krohn 850-page collection pictured above with an author photo is on the year’s best list of both the New Yorker and the Onion’s AV Club. Others, like Leena Krohn’s Collected Fiction and Berit Ellingsen’s Not Dark Yet are brand-new releases. Much of the content is not available elsewhere right now–for example, the e-book of Anna Tambour‘s novel Cranolin, Ann VanderMeer’s The Bestiary anthology (featuring Mieville and Valente), Egner’s The Eisenberg Constant. ![]() If you’re looking for a last-minute holiday gift, or even just after the holidays, I’d like to recommend our current StoryBundle, which features a select mix of novels, novelettes, and anthologies. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In conclusion, a digital genre model is outlined that bridges both the old/new and the formal/functional gaps and may be applied to many other digital genre ecologies. Besides a structural and microlinguistic analysis, it identifies key issues such as pragmatic duality, narrativity and textual variation and change in email hoaxes. This study examines formal and functional aspects of email hoaxes and provides ample evidence both from a systematized corpus and in situ data collected online. Email hoaxes are deceptive messages that spread in digital social networks they are a fascinating object for discourse linguistics as they exemplify a major pragmatic tendency in CMC, namely deceptivity and a lowering of sincerity standards. This book addresses the issue of genrefication by giving an in-depth analysis of email hoaxes as a candidate for digital genre status. 95.00/US143.00 (hbk) Authors: Astrid Ensslin University of. ![]() Amsterdam: John Benjamins, 2008, vii + 239 pp. How genres emerge and evolve on the Internet has become one of the central questions in studies of computer-mediated communication (CMC). Curious Incident could certainly be read as expressing support for this point of view. ![]() In fact, they have many qualities that allow them to excel in particular areas. People on the autism spectrum, they argue, function differently than others, but not in a lesser way. The autism rights movement began in the late 1980s and is still gaining strength, led by autistic people who believe that they need no cure instead, society needs to change its perspective on autistic people. Autism was not recognized until the twentieth century, and for many years, it was regarded without question as a disorder for which a cure needed to be found. Christopher is likely on the autism spectrum, though this is never explicitly stated in the book. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() “Verbal judo is not the flavour of the month. “I simply used my academic background to put words to what great cops have always done,” he said. More than 30 years ago, Thompson codified what he saw as common sense: using tactical language calmly under pressure to achieve a clearly defined goal – with the priority of keeping officers safe. In the current context of tensions inflamed by a series of police shootings of African Americans and of cops killed in revenge attacks, the use of verbal de-escalation to defuse combustible encounters has rarely seemed so important – or so under threat. ![]() Thompson died in 2001, aged 69, but some police instructors are now once again emphasising the value of communication in avoiding combat, advocating scientific analysis allied with realistic training to prepare officers to handle stressful situations. Instead, US police departments increasingly resembled military units both in ethos and equipment. Making police more restrained was a hot topic after the 1991 beating of Rodney King in Los Angeles, but in the wake of 9/11, de-escalation techniques and community policing seemed to fall out of fashion. “Not anybody can talk a knife out of somebody’s hand.” “Anybody can teach English,” he said in one of his training video from the 1990s. ![]() The father of a tactical communication style known as “verbal judo”, he wrote his first book on the subject in 1983 and became a successful law enforcement trainer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There’s too much of a deluxe air to this production that ultimately sinks its ambitions to be anything close to the definitive version of Parks’ writing, which remains stellar. Why does this matter? Because Topdog/Underdog is a play about barely clinging onto the end of society’s rope. And Dede Ayite’s simple costumes seem, well, too good-Abdul-Mateen’s jeans and a t-shirt seem to be fitted straight off a Yeezy runway. The sound design, by Justin Ellington, should make even the hottest clubs in Ibiza green with envy, and is far too loud. It might be that timeless dictum, delivered unto us by Freckle, that “Sometimes, things that are expensive are worse.” The room the brothers share (a “temporary” arrangement), meant to evoke the rattiness of a big city boarding house, would net at least $1.2k in the current market. ![]() ![]() ![]() The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. Annabel is singularly driven to marry a rich man and could just be written off as a gold digger but the author gives background story here and there on how Annabel' s father made her keep the accounts and how she had to scrimp and save to make sure the family had enough to eat and survive on. I give major kudos to the author to be able to make Annabel likeable.
